Peer-focused prison reentry programs: Which peer characteristics matter most?

Over the past two decades, recidivism rates have remained relatively stable, leading practitioners to explore innovative reentry solutions. One model, based on concept of peer mentorship, has received renewed attention. Unfortunately, little is known about which characteristics make mentors most effective in a prison setting. This study uses participant observation and semi-structured interviews, embedded with survey questions, understand “peer” staff, mentors, mentees perceive as important. Analysis data also suggests that history incarceration perceived important characteristic for context. Additionally, qualitative analysis reveals need be credible role models reentry. credibility was almost exclusively linked lived experience incarceration. Peer mentorship remains viable option improving outcomes, but hiring appropriate, peers essential implementation.
